Batman versus Darkseid: Round 1

IMG 0394 1 300x300 Batman versus Darkseid: Round 1
Batman sacrificed himself to kill Darkseid during Final Crisis, showing that he had the courage to stand alone against a God. However, this was not the first time the two had crossed paths. This panel shows their first encounter. Batman bought back the soul of a kidnapped Supergirl by threatening to destroy Darkseid’s planet Apokolips with his Darkseid’s own weapons. He absorbed a beating, but managed to win the battle of wills. Albeit with a ominous theat that foreshadowed the fate that Batman would one day experience.

Jean-Paul Valley as Azrael

azrael2 300x240 Jean Paul Valley as Azrael
Jean-Paul Valley was a university student who suddenly discovered that he was bred and programmed from birth to be an assassin by a secret religious group called The Sacred Order of Saint Dumas. As the costumed Azrael, he was helped by Batman to break his programming and fought crime alongside the Bat family for several years. He is best known for controversially taking over as Batman while Bruce Wayne convalesced after having his back broken by Bane.

Unfortunately, his upbringing led him to be a violent, sometimes lethal Batman, radically changing the costume to be more damaging. This led to Bruce Wayne having to forcibly bringing him down and take back the mantle. He continued to adventure as Azrael for some time before being killed, although his body was never found.

Emergency Bat-Turns

emergency Bat Turns. 217x300 Emergency Bat Turns
How exactly is a Bat-Turn different from a regular turn? All I know is this picture indicates it needs an emergency lever to pull off.

Update: This amazing footage was recently unearthed showing the fabled Bat-Turn.

Unmasked

Unmasked by Kuroi Tsuki 300x205 Unmasked
This wondrous shot of the Bat family is brought to us by Kuroi Tsuki. There are some anachronisms, such as Barbara Gordon still able to walk and in her Batgirl costume. In any case, it shows how even a so-called loner like Batman can accomplish so much more with family and friends supporting him.

Ever since Michael Keaton did it in the 1988 film, it has become part of Batman’s lore for him to dramatically announce exactly who he was. As if they didn’t already know :)

Harvey Dent as Two-Face

Of all of Batman’s rogues, none is more closely aligned to his 1940s street crime roots than Two-Face. Young district attorney Harvey Dent was once a staunch ally in Gotham’s fight against crime. That is until one of the gangsters he was trying to prosecute threw a bottle of acid at him, horribly disfiguring half his face. The injury triggered a psychotic break and Harvey Dent became Two-Face. A murderous crime lord obsessed with duality, and whose every decision was determined by a flip of his two-sided coin.

Originally written as just another quirky golden age villain, the nature of Two-Face’s psychosis has evolved over the years to a pure split personality, with each side fighting for dominance, unaware of what the other is doing. In this way, he is written closer to the Jekyll and Hyde story that was his inspiration. This was played down in the film The Dark Knight, as Harvey Dent was written more as the simple story of a good man falling from grace under extreme circumstances.
