The Darkest Knight
Frank Miller set the gold standard for a dark and gritty Batman (and superheroes in general) with his groundbreaking work: The Dark Knight Returns. The plot involved an aged Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement for a final battle.
The Black Suit
In his 1989 Batman film, director Tim Burton pioneered the idea of an all black batsuit, which all subsequent film versions have emulated. With cape flared out, it helped with the illusion that the Batman was a monstrous giant Bat.
Interestingly, the original design had Batman with a black cape, but due to limited 1940s coloring options, it was interpreted and popularized as the blue cape seen in many versions since.
